London is top start-up and innovation hub in Europe

29 November 2017

London is top start-up and innovation hub in EuropeA new survey has found that London is still overwhelmingly viewed as Europe's start-up and innovation hub - both by Londoners and Europeans.

The survey by CRM platform Hubspot has found that the reputation of the UK capital remains intact as a hub for start-ups and innovation, despite fears following the EU referendum in June 2016.

Hubspot's poll found that London was named as the top place for innovation and start-ups by respondents from Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin; in addition, 53% of Londoners also said their city still holds this title.

In addition, 81% of respondents said London is a "great city for innovation", with East London Tech City (also known as Silicon Roundabout) recognised as the third largest technology start-up cluster in the world after San Francisco and New York City.

Other key findings include:

  • 53% of Londoners said they aspire to work in technology;
  • 55% of Londoners would consider starting their own company;
  • 78% of Londoners would leave their current job to move to a start-up because of the benefits;
  • However, only 71% feel confident that they will consistently be able to find employment in London – the lowest of all regions surveyed.

Christian Kinnear, managing director of EMEA at HubSpot, said: "A vibrant accelerator community, a growing number of jobs and a willingness to move into the tech sector help make London the most innovative city in Europe.

"We were encouraged to see over half of the respondents questioned have aspirations to work in the tech industry; no doubt driven by the lucrative opportunities available. If this enthusiasm for technology professions can be harnessed, this could solve recruitment challenges and enable London to maintain its status as a thriving hub for innovation long after Brexit is finalised."
