Why your employees may be on the verge of leavingA survey of over 8,500 employees and employers across 13 European countries has revealed that many more workers are looking for another job than their bosses realise - especially in the UK.

The Evolution of Work 2017 report by the ADP Research Institute found that 70% of UK employees would consider leaving their current job, with 24% actively looking for new opportunities and 46% passively looking. This figure is higher than the 60% of European employees who said they were open to leaving their current job.

UK employees are less likely to consider themselves devoted to their place of work, according to the findings - just 48% say they are loyal, compared to the 58% European average. In addition, nearly two-thirds (62%) of UK workers say they do not feel valued at work, compared to 44% of German employees.

The findings also show that UK employers are overly optimistic about the way that their employees feel. While 61% of British employers say their employees feel purposeful, only 46% of workers agree; and while 56% of employers say they value their people, just 38% of employees actually feel valued.

On average, UK employees would leave their current role for a 10% pay rise (compared to a European average of 12%). However, a significant number of those polled (46%) said money was not an issue and they would consider another job that offered the same salary or even slightly less.

Jeff Phipps, managing director at ADP UK said employers need to "work twice as hard to ensure they are retaining the best talent. Organisations must look internally to make sure they are doing everything within their power to make their workforce feel valued and purposeful, and in turn more likely to stay."

Ahu Yildirmaz, co-head of the ADP Research Institute, said: "Of course pay and work hours play an important role in retaining employees, but meeting employee expectations is key. Employees say they are more likely to stay with a company if their experiences are aligned with the expectations agreed to when hired - and if they understand how their role helps to achieve business goals. But when a position shifts away from that understanding, employees are already thinking of leaving."
